-- Abstract: Agroforestry systems (AFS) are considered to be an alternative model for sustainable land use and are being increasingly adopted by family farms. However, depending on the location where they are developed, these systems can suffer from the threat of fires. In the climate changing context, the rising average of Earth?s temperature can increase the occurrence of fires. Therefore, evaluating the ecological and economic impacts of fires in AFS could contribute to minimize possible damages to AFS. Considering an event of accidental fire in an AFS situated in an experimental area of Embrapa eio Ambiente in Jaguariúna (SP), a data survey was carried out concerning the survival conditions and mortality of the different plant species. Among the results obtained, we found that more than 33% (n=41) of the burnt plants showed regrowth at the base or near the trunk, close to the soil. This sprouting, which is recognized as an adaptation to fire, can act as a mechanism for recovering the above-ground biomass in plants that have been totally or partially damaged by burning, contributing to a faster recovery of the system. In this study, species that showed regrowth were those that colonize the environment in the initial stages of the ecological succession process, showing the ability to withstand fire. However, besides the need to evaluate the development of these plants after regrowth, further studies will be required in others contexts, so that this knowledge could be applied to increase the resistance and resilience of AFS to fires.
